Let’s thank God for pouring out his blessings on our country

The United States of America has experienced unprecedented levels of liberty, prosperity, and security

These blessings aren’t the result of happenstance or any inherent superiority on the part of the American people. Instead, our national greatness flows from Christ and our public faith in Him.

After all, we have been a “Bible nation” from the very beginning. Our national birth certificate—the Declaration of Independence—articulated many of the biblical principles that would eventually undergird our system of government. As our founding fathers later attested, God had providentially guided them as they laid the foundation of our nation upon the idea of liberty under God’s law.

For these reasons, early Americans celebrated Independence Day with worship and gratitude for God’s protection, favor, and blessing.

Writing to his wife Abigail immediately after the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain, John Adams presciently foresaw the importance of the historical event that had just taken place:

I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations [fireworks] from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.

Yes, John Adams predicted that Independence Day would be celebrated with fireworks, parades, sports, and guns! How’s that for a prediction come true?

But also notice that John Adams emphasized the significance of commemorating Independence Day with solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.

Let’s set aside some time tomorrow to follow the example of early Americans. Consider leading your family and friends in prayer and worship this Independence Day. Be sure to thank God for His providential care over the United States of America and ask for His continued help as we rebuild our nation on its founding principles.

As we gather to enjoy grilled hot dogs and dazzling fireworks displays, let us unite in the unwavering conviction that God is the author of our liberty and the fountainhead of our national blessings!
