It goes without saying that Idaho Family Policy Center has achieved amazing victories in the family policy arena over the past few years.
But our greatest accomplishment came last week when Gov. Brad Little signed our bill to protect preborn children with beating hearts!
Senate Bill 1309, which was signed by Gov. Brad Little on March 23, 2022, will make our Heartbeat law enforceable on April 22, 2022. This means that we are only three weeks away from banning most abortions once a preborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable at six weeks of pregnancy!
Sadly, tens of thousands of precious babies have been murdered since the Idaho legislature legalized abortion in 1973. Thankfully, much of that needless slaughter will finally end when our Heartbeat law goes into effect in just a few weeks.
For the first time in nearly fifty years, preborn children with beating hearts will have a chance to live their lives. I’m especially grateful for the bill sponsors, Sen. Patti Anne Lodge (R-Huston) and Reps. Steven Harris (R-Meridian) and Barbara Ehardt (R-Idaho Falls), who were relentless in fighting to make this a reality.
But the fight isn’t over yet. Abortionists at Planned Parenthood have filed a lawsuit challenging the law in state court. They’re hoping that activist state judges not only block enforcement of our Heartbeat law but also invent a state constitutional right to abortion that allows abortion-on-demand through birth.
This is a time for courage. We know this law is constitutionally, morally, and scientifically sound. Now we need to stand strong to make sure our Heartbeat law survives this legal challenge so it can start saving babies. And we need to keep fighting until all preborn children receive equal protection of the laws, no matter their stage of development.
