PRESS RELEASE: House Approves Bill to Protect Teachers and Government Employees Using Biologically Accurate Pronouns

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 15, 2024

BOISE, IDAHO – Earlier today, the Idaho House approved House Bill 538 on Compelled Speech, Pronouns, and Titles. This bill shields public school teachers and other government employees from adverse employment action for using biologically correct pronouns.

Over the last several weeks, Idaho Family Policy Center has lobbied and mobilized the grassroots in support of this important legislation.

A statement from Blaine Conzatti, President of Idaho Family Policy Center:

Across the country – and even here in Idaho – teachers who conscientiously object to using preferred pronouns are finding themselves ensnared in the trap of school pronoun policies.

Even in school districts with no written compelled pronoun policy, educators feel pressure from administrators, parents, and students to use preferred pronouns—and these teachers rightly fear what might happen if they continue disregarding such demands.

House Bill 538 protects teachers and other state government employees by safeguarding constitutional guarantees for free speech, conscience rights, and religious freedom.

A recent Idaho Family Policy Center poll shows that 62% of likely Idaho voters believe state law should protect the right of teachers to use biologically accurate pronouns when referring to students.
