Masculinity is under attack. In today’s culture, Christian men are often smeared with harmful stereotypes—especially when it comes to issues like gender roles and domestic abuse.
This past weekend, we hosted Professor Nancy Pearcey at our IFPC Family Forum Night to address this harmful narrative—which she writes about in her most recent book, The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes.
In her presentation, Professor Pearcey shared research showing that church-going evangelical Christian men are actually the most loving and engaged husbands and fathers. These Christian men also have the lowest rates of divorce and domestic violence of any group in our country!
Put simply, devoted Christian men shatter the negative stereotype that masculinity is dangerous and destructive. According to Professor Pearcey:
Why is it that churchgoing, theologically conservative family men test out as the most loving husbands and fathers than any major group in America? The key factor, sociologists discovered, is that these men have a strong commitment to the family as the foundational institution in society. They believe marriage is not primarily about individual fulfillment but about forming a stable, loving home to raise a family. Because they hold a high view of marriage and family, they invest more in their marriage, and their wives test out highest in marital happiness.
Despite what we often hear today, biblical masculinity isn’t toxic—but attacking it is.
Now more than ever, we need to pray for churches to teach biblical masculinity and affirm the Christian husbands and fathers who embody it.
