1. Idaho fentanyl bill approved by House committee
Here’s proof that biblical citizenship works: Because you got involved, a bill that addresses fentanyl drug trafficking passed out of the House Judiciary and Rules Committee earlier this week!
House Bill 406 – which is sponsored by Rep. Ted Hill (R-Eagle) and Sen. Todd Lakey (R-Nampa) – imposes stronger penalties for fentanyl dealers who destroy families and poison our communities.
By adding fentanyl to the list of drugs that already carry mandatory minimums for trafficking amounts, this legislation would create a strong deterrent for drug cartels and other criminal enterprises that would otherwise import fentanyl into Idaho. It would also create the crime of drug-induced homicide when a person dies as a result of a drug overdose.
Last week, we expected the committee vote margin to be extremely close. But as community members like you got involved—sending more than 7,000 emails through the IFPC Action Center asking committee members to support the bill—it became clear that the the bill would advance to the next step of the legislative process, passing out of committee by a wide margin!
2. Idaho library smut bill is dead—at least for now
Earlier this month, state legislators reintroduced an updated version of the Children’s School and Library Protection Act, which largely utilized model language drafted by Idaho Family Policy Center.
But last week, state representatives pulled the bill off the House floor and back to committee, effectively shelving the bill for now.
According to some state legislators, a new “compromise” version of the legislation is in the works.
Idaho Family Policy Center is not involved in those discussions, and we haven’t seen any of the new language that may make its way into the new bill. That said, we call on legislators to ensure any prospective legislation both adequately restricts children’s access to obscene materials and provides an effective enforcement mechanism.
In the meantime, here’s how you can make a difference: Sign our petition asking state legislators and Gov. Little to protect children’s innocence by fixing this problem once and for all!
3. Idaho Senate bill protects conservatives from false charges of “domestic terrorism”
In recent years, activists in federal law enforcement have targeted conservatives by weaponizing the “domestic terrorism” label.
Traditional Catholics, pro-life activists, and concerned parents at school board meetings have all come under investigation by federal law enforcement—including the politicized Biden Department of Justice—in recent years.
All of this illuminates why Senate Bill 1220 is so important. The legislation, which is sponsored by Sen. Kelly Anthon (R-Burley), protects parental rights and religious freedom by giving a clear definition for “domestic terrorism” that better accords with its popular meaning.
Senate Bill 1220 passed the Idaho Senate this morning and will now be considered by the Idaho House. We’ll keep you updated!
